WebComics Wednesday 10/14/09
Welcome back! It’s Wednesday! Every Wednesday here at WebComics.cc, we’re going to post a round up of the best all ages* webcomics!
(*We’re using “all ages” in the context it’s meant to be used in: good for all ages. That means it could be kid-oriented, but with appeal to adults, or older reader oriented but appropriate for younger readers.)
On Sundays, we take a closer look at one of our favorite webcomics with our Sunday Spotlight. Last Sunday (well, Monday), we shined the WebComics.CC spotlight on K.J. Kolka’s The Cardinal, both the old incarnation (hosted here on WebComics.CC) and the new incarnation.
NEW WEBCOMICS:
We’ve been reviewing webcomics for to add to our list, but it does take a little time for us all to read the webcomics that have been suggested to us. Please, don’t stop giving us ideas!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THIS WEEK’S LIST:
Ace of Diamonds: A Western comic, remixed. Black Diamond Western was an old Western comic about a masked lawman, a rip-off of The Lone Ranger. It has fallen into the public domain, so writer Ben Avery is taking the artwork from that old comic and “remixing” it into a completely new story with completely new characters and completely new dialogue: ACE OF DIAMONDS.
Ace of Diamonds is no longer just a story about a generic masked lawman, it’s the story of Ace, a cowboy who wakes up one day with no memory. But he has a gun, a mask, and a badge. He doesn’t know his past . . . but he can guess his future. You can read from the beginning here. The new storyline, “Six Shooters and Six Strings”, began last week. This week, Avery is taking some time off to work on other projects.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ArmorQuest: ArmorQuest is a fantasy story about a boy named Timothy who decides he wants to join the Knights of the Way to fight off the dragons that threaten the land. WebComics.CC is proud to present ArmorQuest in it’s full page glory, presented in black and white as originally drawn by the genius phenom Sherwin Schwartzrock. WebComics.CC’s own Ben Avery is the writer of ArmorQuest.
For the first short story, “Chapter 0″, pages are being posted every weekday! After that, starting with “Chapter 1″ pages will be posted every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. You can start “Chapter 0″ by clicking here.

Best Mann for the Job: Novelist Chris Wells and artist Erica Wells are husband and wife, and we’re glad for it, because they make for an awesome team! Many of their comic book endeavors can be found on their website, Studiowell.com.
“Best Mann for the Job”, the story of a small town police sheriff, is their most recent. Chris and Erica describe it it as “a cross between a rural Dick Tracy and Gasoline Alley”. The combination makes for an intriguing story.

Boodachitaville: Every Friday, Boodachitaville posts a strangely and/or hilariously skewed view of the world through the eyes of Bob and Eric, cartoon avatars of the creators who happen to be named Bob and Eric. Topics range from religion to video games, politics to movies, and nearly everything in between . . . and beyond!
You can start from the beginning here. It’s really funny stuff. Check it out! Boodachitaville updates every Friday.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cow and Buffalo: Hilarious humor strip about the adventures of a, well, cow and a buffalo. It’s been around for a while, and it’s well worth if you want to start from the beginning: click here. Cow and Buffalo is a humor strip, but they re also known to go on longer form adventures, which is what is going on right now.
The current adventure begins about here.
Updates every Sunday.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dog Eat Doug: A comic strip about the having a baby in the home . . . from the perspective of the family dog. Very funny, very cute. if you have a pet or a child or, even better, both, this will resound with you. If you don’t, don’t fret, it’s good enough that anyone who likes quiet, quirky humorwill get a good chuckle out of it.
See our Sunday Spotlight here!
Updates every day!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dreamland Chronicles: Scott Christian Sava’s insanely popular webcomic is what you would get if Pixar made a Narnia movie into a comic book. You just may want to get started by going to our library and reading book by book, or just starting from the beginning on his website. There’s a reason he’s got millions of readers.
Updates every weekday.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
K.J. Kolka’s The Cardinal: The mystery of the invisible man continues! K. J. Kolka’s adventures of The Cardinal is a comic strip that has been running in one form or another for years now. You can start this new story from the beginning here. This current incarnation of The Cardinal is a completely new take on the character (an “Ultimate” version, so to speak).
The Cardinal updates every Sunday.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
K.J. Kolka’s The Cardinal Classic: WebComics.CC is proud to announce that we are be hosting and posting the original comic strips from the very beginning of The Cardinal’s long run.
Kolka’s interest in old school comic strips and early Marvel superheroics is very much on display in these early stories and in his art style.
We hope you enjoy these comic strips as we bring them to you every Thursday!
One Swoop Fell: If you’re not reading One Swoop Fell, you should. One Swoop Fell features beautiful artwork and compelling characters. One Swoop Fell is the best of what all ages comics can and should be: original, inventive, artistically interesting, featuring interesting characters.
New to One Swoop Fell? Read from the beginning HERE.
One Swoop Fell updates every Wednesday.
OOP! Out of Print Comics: Mike Parkinson’s Out of Print is like “Mini-Marvels”, only using public domain characters. The basic concept is that it’s the present-day, and all those old superheroes from canceled books are attending a support group for characters who have lapsed into the public domain. What makes this fun and unique is that they are drawn in a very cartoony, stylish way. “We look like we’re straight outta Peanuts,” one character complains. The characters are self-aware, knowing they are comic characters and even speaking with the artist on occasion.
Reverend Fun: Skewed humor strip that skewers some of the trappings of the Christian life. I’ve seen a lot of strips like this, but this is easily my favorite.
If Gary Larson doodled cartoons while sitting in Sunday School, something like this would have been the result. The archives goes back over ten years! (Here’s a blog posting showing some of our favorites.)
Updates every few days.
Silly Daddy: Joe Chiappetta’s Silly Daddy: A Death in the Family won the Xeric award back in 1998. Silly Daddy, back then, was a long running series of comics that received much acclaim from the indy comics world. Silly Daddy, today, is a long running webcomic. Joe describes it like this: “Silly Daddy is the unplugged ‘Family Circus’ of today’s generation. Imagine Van Gogh with a wife and kids in the 21ST century. Or cross ‘Peanuts’ with the movie ‘Nacho Libre.’” Its observations of family life are, well, silly and touching at the same time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Super Siblings: Patrick Scullin describes Super Siblings as “all ages comics for geeks with kids” and he pretty much hits the nail on the head with that! Super Siblings is the story of Scout and Banshee. Scout is a superhero, Banshee is a supervillain. The twist? No one, not their parents or the rest of the world or even each other, knows they are actually brother and sister!
This is mainly a humor strip, and the jokes cover topics like family vacation, school, sports, geek stuff, and relationships . . . all with the backdrop of a son and daughter who are, in secret, a super powered hero and a super powered villain.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tastes Like Chicken: A single panel humor strip, tastes Like Chicken is part Far Side, part Seinfeld. Check out the hilarious archive here.
Tastes Like Chicken is by Josh Alves.
Updates every Wednesday.
This Is How We Met: We’ve known Jamie Cosley for a while, and we’ve enjoyed hid Tony Pony comics. His graphic novel, More Than Sparrows, took the “funny animal” style of art and told a touching and relevant story about forgiveness. This Is How We Met has Jamie’s trademark “funny animal” style art, mixed with what could be called a combination between, what looks like, to us, at this early stage, a mash up of How I Met Your Mother and Close Encounters of the Third Kind! But with Jamie, and his bizarre sense of humor and gentle character development, you just never know what to expect!
