I’m a sucker for The Dreamland Chronicles, I’ll admit it.

I love that it is a big, epic fantasy. I love that it has a lot of fun, interesting characters. I love that it takes the time to have some of those quiet character moments. I love that Scott Christian Sava has been able to actually produce 1000 pages of material in his story, in a world where many creators just give up around page 10. I love that he has, like, tens or hundreds of thousands of readers.

But I just discovered something that, to be honest, was there for a long time but I’d never noticed before, that makes The Dreamland Chronicles even more fun.

The first is this introduction to The Dreamland Chronicles, a short comic that acts as an introduction to the website and all the little features that the website has. The most important feature, to me? Found on page five of the introduction, there is a look at the bookmark. For a story as long as Dreamland Chronicles, this is an awesome feature to have, and one that makes tackling such a hefty amount of story a much less intimidating task. If length was a reason you didn’t want to get into The Dreamland Chronicles, you no longer have that excuse.

The second is this awesome “comic-mentary”, a documentary styled series of about a dozen pages that get into the creation of The Dreamland Chronicles. “Bringing Dreamland to Life” shows, in broad strokes, the steps of the process that Sava and his team go through to create The Dreamland Chronicles. It’s interesting and fun to see.

These two little treasures from the Dreamland website supplement things nicely, but really they’re just a small part of the reason you should be reading this comic. “The Chronicles of Narnia if done by Pixar as a comic” is a great way to describe The Dreamland Chronicles, and the story, characters, and art are the reasons you should be reading it.

~ Ben

It portrays the life of Christ, although that does not make it unique, many people have done this (Community Comics produced The Thieves recently, and CC’s Ben is working on a new life of Christ story as well).

It takes Biblical events and puts them in a modern setting, although that also does not make it unique. Al Hartley, the creator of numerous Christian comics in the ’70s and ’80s (including the “Christian Archie” comics) told many different Bible stories in the modern day, including Paul and Noah. More recently, there’s been a crop of people doing “The Bible in Unique Settings” comics — specifically, futuristic and fantastic settings, including Hero!, which asks the question, “What if Jesus were born in Bethlehem . . . Pennsylvania?”

What sets Rabbi Encounters apart from the many, many other Bible comics? It works, that’s what! The setting change isn’t for a “cool factor” or “shock value” (as many of the “sci-fi Jesus” comics tried to do). No, the setting chance makes the story of Christ more relatable, by putting it in a modern context. At the same time, it does so in a logical way, portraying the story not as a shoe-horned metaphor or allegory, but as a convincing story.

The other thing that sets this comic apart from so many of the other “story of Jesus” comics is the art. Rob Woodrum masterfully draws an emotional story, with characters you can connect with. It’s a mature (in the actual sense, not in the “using mature as a euphemism for over the top violence and sexuality”) well-crafted story about a “rabbi” (spiritual teacher) and the people whose lives he touches.

Read Rabbi Encounters here.

Good question. It kind of defies description. It’s part epic fantasy . . . part simplistic cartoon . . . the creator calls it “Smurfs meets Lord of the Rings”, which is a fair estimation . . . I’m also reminded of Bone . . . and Beanworld.

Smurfs? Bone? Lord of the Rings? Beanworld? These are accurate descriptions, but they aren’t enough. Mash them all together, and you can imagination what Dooze might be like, but it’s really just something you need to read for yourself. Bone may be the closest description, but the “Smurfs meets Lord of the Rings” has a “ring of truth” as well.

So if you like big fantasy with light humor and some deep truths, you should enjoy Doodze. We at WebComics.CC highly recommend it.

My good friend James Lyle has a new webcomic called “The Plus”, a wacky superhero crime comic in the vein of The Spirit. (You can tell from the first page where he’s getting a lot of his inspiration for this character and the style of storytelling.)

The Plus has a “plus power” that allows him to grow or shrink “from the size of a house to the size of a mouse”, and the villains of the story seem to have been affected by the same “plus virus” that gave him his powers.

I have no idea where the series is heading. This first episode is just that, an episode — so this may be a series of short stories, and I like that possiblity. It sets up the characters and settings nicely, and the story itself gives off a nice “Emperor’s New Clothes” vibe, with a nice little social commentary to boot. I also don’t know what kind of update schedule James has planned. It looks like he’s planning to put up complete stories as he does them, so when chapter two goes live, we’ll announce it here.

You can read the first chapter of The Plus here.

On Monday, Timothy’s journey of discovery will begin in earnest, as he learns about his connection to the Knights of the Way . . . and a secret his village has been hiding from him.

Additionally, we are working on revamping the WebComics.CC site to allow for automatic updating, to let you know when the comics we love are updated. Our static link list will be restructured as well, to make it easier to navigate. All of this is a part of trying to find a real identity for WebComics.CC. We’re not a broad webcomic host, or a webcomic collective. We’re a webcomic list, although we do host a few of our own titles . . . For now, and for the foreseeable future, our aim is to point you to fun or exciting or uplifting or funny or cool webcomics. That will not change. What will change is the “how” of that mission, as we seek to find the best way to do that.

And in the meantime, we’ll be bringing to you ArmorQuest, Hero TV (new stories starting soon), Classic The Cardinal, and Chosen Mor– whoops! About Chosen Mortals . . .

Finally, in other big news for WebComics.CC, Chosen Mortals is going to be replaced by a series called CODEX. They are basically the same thing, but CODEX is a shorter name. The first CODEX story will be The Thieves, followed by some short stories. Hopefully we’ll have some big news for you in that regard.

Lots of things have been happening. More will be happening as well. Like release of some of our titles for electronic readers! (ArmorQuest is the exception. We have to hold off on that for contractual reasons.) And some new stories for some old titles.

~ Ben

On Sundays, we take a closer look at one of our favorite webcomics with our Sunday Spotlight. Last Sunday (well, Monday), we shined the WebComics.CC spotlight on K.J. Kolka’s The Cardinal, both the old incarnation (hosted here on WebComics.CC) and the new incarnation.

NEW WEBCOMICS:

We’ve been reviewing webcomics for to add to our list, but it does take a little time for us all to read the webcomics that have been suggested to us. Please, don’t stop giving us ideas!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THIS WEEK’S LIST:
Ace of Diamonds: A Western comic, remixed. Black Diamond Western was an old Western comic about a masked lawman, a rip-off of The Lone Ranger. It has fallen into the public domain, so writer Ben Avery is taking the artwork from that old comic and “remixing” it into a completely new story with completely new characters and completely new dialogue: ACE OF DIAMONDS.
Ace of Diamonds is no longer just a story about a generic masked lawman, it’s the story of Ace, a cowboy who wakes up one day with no memory. But he has a gun, a mask, and a badge. He doesn’t know his past . . . but he can guess his future. You can read from the beginning here. The new storyline, “Six Shooters and Six Strings”, began last week. This week, Avery is taking some time off to work on other projects.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ArmorQuest: ArmorQuest is a fantasy story about a boy named Timothy who decides he wants to join the Knights of the Way to fight off the dragons that threaten the land. WebComics.CC is proud to present ArmorQuest in it’s full page glory, presented in black and white as originally drawn by the genius phenom Sherwin Schwartzrock. WebComics.CC’s own Ben Avery is the writer of ArmorQuest.

For the first short story, “Chapter 0″, pages are being posted every weekday! After that, starting with “Chapter 1″ pages will be posted every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. You can start “Chapter 0″ by clicking here.

Best Mann for the Job: Novelist Chris Wells and artist Erica Wells are husband and wife, and we’re glad for it, because they make for an awesome team! Many of their comic book endeavors can be found on their website, Studiowell.com.

“Best Mann for the Job”, the story of a small town police sheriff, is their most recent. Chris and Erica describe it it as “a cross between a rural Dick Tracy and Gasoline Alley”. The combination makes for an intriguing story.

Boodachitaville: Every Friday, Boodachitaville posts a strangely and/or hilariously skewed view of the world through the eyes of Bob and Eric, cartoon avatars of the creators who happen to be named Bob and Eric. Topics range from religion to video games, politics to movies, and nearly everything in between . . . and beyond!

You can start from the beginning here. It’s really funny stuff. Check it out! Boodachitaville updates every Friday.

It’s been around for a while, and it’s well worth if you want to start from the beginning: click here. Cow and Buffalo is a humor strip, but they re also known to go on longer form adventures, which is what is going on right now.

The current adventure begins about here.

Updates every Sunday.

Very funny, very cute. if you have a pet or a child or, even better, both, this will resound with you. If you don’t, don’t fret, it’s good enough that anyone who likes quiet, quirky humorwill get a good chuckle out of it.

You just may want to get started by going to our library and reading book by book, or just starting from the beginning on his website. There’s a reason he’s got millions of readers.

Kolka’s The Cardinal: The mystery of the invisible man continues! K. J. Kolka’s adventures of The Cardinal is a comic strip that has been running in one form or another for years now. You can start this new story from the beginning here. This current incarnation of The Cardinal is a completely new take on the character (an “Ultimate” version, so to speak).

Kolka’s The Cardinal Classic: WebComics.CC is proud to announce that we are be hosting and posting the original comic strips from the very beginning of The Cardinal’s long run.

Kolka’s interest in old school comic strips and early Marvel superheroics is very much on display in these early stories and in his art style.

One Swoop Fell features beautiful artwork and compelling characters. One Swoop Fell is the best of what all ages comics can and should be: original, inventive, artistically interesting, featuring interesting characters.

Out of Print Comics: Mike Parkinson’s Out of Print is like “Mini-Marvels”, only using public domain characters. The basic concept is that it’s the present-day, and all those old superheroes from canceled books are attending a support group for characters who have lapsed into the public domain. What makes this fun and unique is that they are drawn in a very cartoony, stylish way. “We look like we’re straight outta Peanuts,” one character complains. The characters are self-aware, knowing they are comic characters and even speaking with the artist on occasion.

Out of Print is very fun and well worth your time. It’s also relatively new, meaning it won’t take you long to get up to date reading through the archives (a good thing) but that also means you’ll get through the archives quickly and have to wait for new comics (bad thing). I’ve seen a lot of strips like this, but this is easily my favorite.

Silly Daddy, back then, was a long running series of comics that received much acclaim from the indy comics world. Silly Daddy, today, is a long running webcomic. Joe describes it like this: “Silly Daddy is the unplugged ‘Family Circus’ of today’s generation. Imagine Van Gogh with a wife and kids in the 21ST century. Or cross ‘Peanuts’ with the movie ‘Nacho Libre.’” Its observations of family life are, well, silly and touching at the same time.

Super Siblings is the story of Scout and Banshee. Scout is a superhero, Banshee is a supervillain. The twist? No one, not their parents or the rest of the world or even each other, knows they are actually brother and sister!

This is mainly a humor strip, and the jokes cover topics like family vacation, school, sports, geek stuff, and relationships . . . all with the backdrop of a son and daughter who are, in secret, a super powered hero and a super powered villain.

His graphic novel, More Than Sparrows, took the “funny animal” style of art and told a touching and relevant story about forgiveness. This Is How We Met has Jamie’s trademark “funny animal” style art, mixed with what could be called a combination between, what looks like, to us, at this early stage, a mash up of How I Met Your Mother and Close Encounters of the Third Kind! But with Jamie, and his bizarre sense of humor and gentle character development, you just never know what to expect!

K.J. Kolka has been doing his series “The Cardinal” for nearly twenty years.

The first round of his Cardinal stories started in 1990, with a comic strip that was very reminiscent of classic comic strips like Dick Tracy, Annie, and other newspaper adventure strips. His other major influence in crafting the stories was the Marvel stories from the ’60’s. Anyone who reads The Cardinal will not be surprised to find that Kolka is a big fan of the classic Ant-Man and Avengers and other Marvel series from that era. The final inspiration for Kolka was his faith. Kolka’s Christianity played a huge part in developing the storylines and characters for The Cardinal.

That chapter of The Cardinal closed in 2006, when Kolka decided to change the focus and style of The Cardinal, tweaking it for a more modern audience. In November, 2007, The Cardinal reappeared, this time online on the Comics Sherpa website. Every week since then, Kolka has presented a new strip every Sunday. Both the storytelling and the artwork are more “modern” looking, but Kolka’s faith is still very present in his new series.

Kurt has been a friend of us here at WebComics.CC for a number of years now (our friendship goes back way before WebComics.CC was even a glimmer in anyone’s eye). When we started WebComics.CC, in our very first posting, actually, The Cardinal on Comics Sherpa was our very first “outside” announcement of a comic. And in that first posting, we said “watch for our presentation of the original Cardinal strip coming soon”.

Well, it wasn’t soon but it did happen.

The new The Cardinal series can be found here. If you want to read from the beginning of that series, click here. The new The Cardinal series is self-contained, as Kolka planned for it to be a relaunch or a reboot of the character. It’s a fun series, and the current storyarc (dealing with an invisible man) is one of Kolka’s best stories ever.

If you’d like to start at the VERY beginning, though, WebComics.CC is proud to present — finally! — the original series. The Cardinal Classic is now online and every Thursday we will be posting a new strip from Kolka’s The Cardinal archives. Click here to see the cover image and the first strip.

K.J. Kolka is a dedicated and talented comic creator, who has been working on a single character for two decades, and that’s why we’re proud to focus on him in our Sunday Spotlight . . . and as a WebComics.CC feature.

NEW WEBCOMICS:

We’re always reviewing new webcomics to promote on WebComics.CC. Here’s three of the newest!

Kolka’s comic “The Cardinal” has been around since 1990. Currently, over at Comics Sherpa you can see the current version of the character in what has been called an “Ultimate Cardinal”, which we have been linking to almost since the beginning here at WebComics.CC. But WebComics.CC is proud to announce that we will be hosting and posting the original comic strips from the very beginning of The Cardinal’s long run.

Kolka’s interest in old school comic strips and early Marvel superheroics is very much on display in these early stories and in his art style.

We hope you enjoy these comic strips as we bring them to you every Thursday!

THIS WEEK’S LIST:

Ace of Diamonds: A Western comic, remixed. Black Diamond Western was an old Western comic about a masked lawman, a rip-off of The Lone Ranger. It has fallen into the public domain, so writer Ben Avery is taking the artwork from that old comic and “remixing” it into a completely new story with completely new characters and completely new dialogue: ACE OF DIAMONDS.

Ace of Diamonds is no longer just a story about a generic masked lawman, it’s the story of Ace, a cowboy who wakes up one day with no memory. But he has a gun, a mask, and a badge. He doesn’t know his past . . . but he can guess his future. You can read from the beginning here. The new storyline, “Six Shooters and Six Strings”, starts today.

Topics range from religion to video games, politics to movies, and nearly everything in between . . . and beyond!

This week: Bob v. “What Not to Wear”.

You can start from the beginning here. It’s really funny stuff. Check it out! Boodachitaville updates every Friday.

We’ve been reviewing webcomics for to add to our list, but it does take a little time for us all to read the webcomics that have been suggested to us. Please, don’t stop giving us ideas!

Ace of Diamonds isno longer just a story about a generic masked lawman, it’s teh story of Ace, a cowboy who wakes up one day with no memoery. But he has a gun, a mask, and a badge. He doesn’t know his past . . . but he can guess his future. You can read from the beginning here.

Many of their comic book endeavors can be found on their website, Studiowell.com.

“Best Mann for the Job”, the story of a small town police sheriff, is their most recent. Chris and Erica describe it as “a cross between a rural Dick Tracy and Gasoline Alley”. The combination is nice, and makes for an intriguing story.

But with Jamie, and his bizarre sense of humor and gentle character development, you jsut never know what to expect!

Tracy struggles with her Christianity and on how to stay on the Right Track. Doug is her Guardian Angel. He provides insight and advice. Tristan is a cat.

Dog Eat Doug is the brainchild of Brian Anderson. It chronicles the day to day life of a chocolate lab named Sophie and a baby named Doug. The relationship between the two is spot on perfect. And the humor is gentle and warm, but also a poignant parody of parenting and pet owning.

Today’s comic is the best I’ve read, easily. If you read this spotlight on Sunday, then you should go directly to the comic strip I’m talking about. if you read this during the week, you’ll want to go back a few strips to the September 27 strip. It’s full color and, well, you’ll know it when you see it.

The fact you’ll have to go back a few strips to find the one I’m talking about is another strength. Dog Eat Doug updates with new strips every day of the week! Can’t beat that. A comic strip that’s artistic, funny, and you get a new one almost every single day? We don’t deserve webcomics like this!

Check it out here. You’ll be glad you did.
